About Jack Oliver

Mountain Guide, Climbing Instructor & Founder of North West Mountain Guides

Hi, I'm Jack.

I'm a qualified Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (MCI), mountain guide and founder of North West Mountain Guides.

Over the last decade, climbing and mountaineering have taken me to some incredible places. I've climbed throughout the Alps, completed every route featured in Ken Wilson's Classic Rock, and enjoyed unforgettable adventures on some of the UK's most iconic climbs, including the Old Man of Hoy.

But my journey into the mountains didn't begin with ambitious climbing objectives or a career plan.

It started on a navigation course in the Lake District.

During the course, I got chatting to the instructor and discovered he was an MCI. I remember asking him how he ended up doing what he did for a living. The idea that somebody could spend their life climbing, guiding and working in the mountains had never really crossed my mind before.

That conversation stayed with me.

What started as a passion for the hills gradually became a career, and today I spend my time helping others develop skills, build confidence and enjoy everything the mountains have to offer.

A Passion for Climbing & The Mountains

Since then, climbing and mountaineering have become a huge part of my life.

While I enjoy all aspects of the mountains, traditional climbing and long mountain routes have always been my biggest passion. There is something special about moving through wild and remote places, far from the crowds, relying on good judgement, teamwork and the skills you've developed over years of experience.

That passion has taken me from classic mountain routes in the Lake District and North Wales to bigger adventures in the Alps, and has led me to seek out many of the UK's most celebrated climbs.

For me, climbing has never been about chasing grades. It's about adventure, exploration and the experiences that come from spending time in incredible places with good people.

Whether it's a long day on a mountain crag, an exposed ridge scramble or a classic multi-pitch route, those are the experiences that continue to inspire me and keep me coming back for more.

My Approach To Guiding

I believe the best days in the mountains combine learning, challenge and enjoyment.

Whether you're joining me for a climbing course, a guided scrambling day or private mountain guiding, I want you to feel relaxed, supported and confident throughout the experience.

I focus on:

  • Clear and practical instruction
  • Building confidence at your own pace
  • Developing sound mountain judgement
  • Safe decision-making
  • Creating memorable experiences

Alongside my guiding work, I am also a full member of Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team, which has further developed my understanding of mountain safety, teamwork and decision-making in challenging environments.

Ultimately, my goal is simple: to help people enjoy the mountains as much as I do.
